SPIX’S MACAW (Cyanopsitta spixii)

Original price was: $550.00.Current price is: $510.00.

Spix’s macaw (Cyanopsitta spixii), also known as the Little Blue macaw, is a critically endangered parrot species native to Brazil. It is famous for its vibrant blue plumage, with lighter blue on the head and underparts, and darker blue on the wings and tail. The macaw also has a greyish face and beak.

Spix’s macaw primarily inhabited the gallery forests along the Rio São Francisco in northeastern Brazil, where it relied on the Caraibeira tree (Tabebuia aurea) for nesting and feeding. Its diet included seeds, fruits, and nuts.

Due to extensive habitat destruction, illegal trapping, and trade, Spix’s macaw became extinct in the wild by the year 2000. However, a few individuals survive in captivity, leading to intensive conservation efforts, including captive breeding and reintroduction programs. In recent years, reintroduction efforts have shown promise, with some birds being released back into their natural habitat in Brazil.

Spix’s macaw is a symbol of conservation and the importance of preserving biodiversity. Ongoing efforts aim to restore its population and habitat, giving hope for the future of this remarkable species.
